Fuzzy NationFuzzy Nation by John Scalzi
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This just may be the best audiobook ever! Wil Wheaton is the narrator and does an amazing job reading this updated, John Scalzi version of a classic H. Beam Piper story.

One hundred and seventy eight light-years from Earth, Jack Holloway is working as an independent contractor for the ZaraCorp planetary exploitation company when he accidently uncovers a seam of jewels worth trillions of credits. And through an odd quirk of fate, his percentage of the take could be among the highest in history... until a family of local cat-like creatures moves into his cabin with him and his dog Carl.

Jack begins to suspect the "fuzzies" are sentient and there are strict Colonial Authority laws forbidding stripping jewels, minerals, and other resources from a planet where a local sentient race exists. The plot twists and turns until the story arrives at a smartly-crafted, very surprising legal hearing that has much to say about human nature.

Highly recommended, especially as an audiobook.
