The 49th Mystic by
Ted Dekker
My rating:
3 of 5 stars
I have read Ted Dekker's historical novels before but this is the first time I have read his Christian science fiction. A blind teenager in the isolated community of Eden, Utah is stalked in her nightmares by a "shadow man." He alternately restores and takes away her eyesight as she learns she is actually the "49th mystic" who must find five "seals" to save both this world and a culture of mystics in an alternative reality. It's a pretty good story, with some excellent twists, but I guess I was hoping for seals that were more rooted in antiquities and less rooted in internal philosophy... Although I get why this fits the genre. I haven't decided yet if I will read book 2 (conclusion) which is scheduled to come out in October.
