Love, love, love this book and the after comments by Orson Scott Card. Teenager Danny North is a member of a very old north-country family that still retains bits of magic dating back from a time before Thor and Loki. However, he believes he is a common "druther" and didn't inherit any of the mage magic, until he finds he can create virtual gates to instantly transport himself from one place to another. He challenges himself to open a great gate to the home planet of the magical families but powerful forces believe it should not be re-created. Great story, full of twists and turns and a totally believable new framework for more lost tales.
